space+ lab

lab for real, virtual + hybrid spaces

what are real, virtual and hybrid spaces, how do they feel, how can they be designed, and where are their limits? these are the questions we explore in the space+ lab, examining the computer-aided augmentation of reality with current XR-technologies.

we research real, virtual + hybrid spaces and objects.

we create possible and impossible places.

we feel spaces and atmospheres.

we transfer the virtual into reality and back.

we activate spaces and objects with XR and real people.

XR

extended realities

the sense of space and its atmosphere, its creative design or active alteration are fundamental for any type of architecture and thus one of the central themes in the architecture study program. hybrid space research - which we understand as applied research in and about space - with its analog, digital, real, and virtual tools like XR (Extended Reality = Virtual Reality VR, Augmented Reality AR and Mixed Reality MR), is here an ideal teaching and learning tool. through its application, space becomes tangible for students. what was previously abstractly conceived becomes concrete and perceptible, significantly enhancing the learning effect and facilitating access to spatial experience.

our goal is not to completely immerse ourselves in virtual spaces and escape reality. rather, the overlaying of the real with the virtual has proven to be one of the most exciting methods in space research. the resulting hybrid space simultaneously sensitizes for the existing as well as its possible meaningful and appropriate modification.

AI

artificial intelligence

artificial intelligence is here. invisible, it surrounds and accompanies us today in almost all areas of our lives. its evolution is exponentially fast due to 'deep learning'. given the potential of artificial intelligence and its far-reaching impact on nearly all aspects of human life, it is essential to further explore this field. after the paradigm shift brought about by digitalization, we are now facing new, far-reaching transformative processes in the economy, technology, society, culture, and education, driven by AI. it is therefore extremely important to understand the technologies, applications, and effects of AI in order to integrate it sensibly and innovatively into the field of architecture and design.

we are investigating the use of AI in architectural studies at TH Köln, with the focus on concept development up to prototype construction, in order to prepare students for a new job market. the aim is not to replace human creativity in the creation of space and objects, but to effectively and qualitatively enhance it through the new possibilities with AI.
